Round 1: Online Assessment
- Duration: 120 mins
- Platform: HackerRank
- Sections: C++ Fundamentals (Pointers, Memory Leaks, Virtual Functions), OS concepts, and 2 Medium-Hard DSA questions (Matrix manipulation and DP).
Round 2: C++ and GPU Architecture Basics
- Duration: 60 mins
- Questions: Implement a Custom Smart Pointer in C++. Then, standard questions on cache locality and why multi-threading is beneficial.
- How to Answer: NVIDIA relies heavily on C++. When writing your code, explain how memory is allocated (Heap vs Stack). The interviewer was impressed when I discussed how contiguous memory allocation in arrays improves cache hit rates compared to linked lists.
Round 3: Deep Learning / Neural Networks
- Duration: 60 mins
- Questions: Explain the forward and backward pass of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Write pseudocode to perform a 2D convolution operation on a matrix without using external libraries.
- Where I went wrong: I fumbled the math during the backward pass (backpropagation) for the convolutional layer. I tried to guess the derivative rather than working it out step-by-step on the board.
- How to Answer: If you get stuck on calculus or backprop, step back and explain the chain rule conceptually. Interviewers value a logical approach over memorized formulas.
Round 4: System Design & HR
- Duration: 45 mins
- Task: Design a pipeline to train a massive image dataset that doesn't fit into RAM.
- Result: Rejected, largely due to struggling with the backpropagation math in Round 3.
Key Takeaways for Freshers
NVIDIA's software roles are a unique intersection of low-level systems programming (C++) and advanced math (AI). Brush up on Operating Systems, memory management, and linear algebra alongside your standard ML prep.
